Star trails, BFN edition

Jason and I started off our evening playing with strobes and looking for things to light up in the darkness. We ended up in Peachland looking for trees to light. While we were in our planning phases, Jason looked up and noticed the lack of clouds. I knew this month’s new moon is less than 24 hours away, thus, what better time to head up the 97C connector towards Merritt and get rid of the light pollution of the city.

We drove 25 minutes to Sunset Main Rd and setup there. It was very chilly -7°C. We spent much of the time in the car, steaming up the windows (it was off, thus no defroster), hoping that no one would come blazing down the road and run over either of our cameras.

The resulting image is approximately 90 thirty-second exposures stacked together using Photoshop, or roughly 45 minutes of star movement. There’s a lot going on in this image. Lots of stars and lots of movement. I haven’t really decided yet if I like this shot, or not.

  1. I think this is a beautiful shot, almost hypnotizing in its intensity. Its simplicity hints at the depth of the universe around us and leads the onlooker into the shot without the overwhelming feeling sometimes caused by gazing into space. Thanks for posting.
